Distinction, first class and second class
Distinction usually begins at 75%, first class at 60% and second class at 50%, with 40% the common pass mark. Those are conventions in most Indian ordinances, not a national rule — a few universities set distinction at 70% and a few at 80%. Your own ordinance is what governs.
The bands, in three currencies
The CGPA column inverts the general ten-point convention, (percentage ÷ 10) + 0.75. Your university may publish a different formula, which moves every figure in that column — see the CGPA to percentage formula.
| Class | Percentage | CGPA (general) | Marks out of 500 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Distinction | 75% and above | 8.25 and above | 375 |
| First class | 60% – 74.99% | 6.75 – 8.24 | 300 |
| Second class | 50% – 59.99% | 5.75 – 6.74 | 250 |
| Pass | 40% – 49.99% | 4.75 – 5.74 | 200 |
| Fail | below 40% | below 4.75 | — |
Percentage to marks works out the figure for any total, and rounds up — a fractional mark is not achievable and rounding down lands you under the threshold.
“First class with distinction” is not a fifth class
It is a first class, marked. Most ordinances define distinction as a mention added to the first class rather than as a separate award, which is why the phrase reads as two things stacked. On a transcript it usually appears as “First Class with Distinction”, and on a form asking for your class the correct entry is first class.
A few universities do treat distinction as its own class. If yours prints it as a standalone award, use that. The document decides, not the convention.
The two rules that cost people a class
A per-subject minimum
Many ordinances require a separate pass in each paper, and sometimes separately in the external component of each paper. An aggregate of 78% with one failed subject is not a distinction — it is usually not a pass until the subject is cleared. The aggregate is correct arithmetic and an incomplete answer to the eligibility question.
A no-backlog condition on distinction
This one is less known and catches strong students. Several ordinances award distinction only to candidates who cleared every subject in the first attempt. Clear a backlog later, score 80% overall, and the distinction is still withheld — the percentage was never the binding constraint.
Both rules live in the examination ordinance, not on the grade card. If a class matters to you — for a scholarship, a postgraduate application or an employer that asks — read the ordinance before you assume the percentage settles it.
Which percentage the class is computed on
Usually the aggregate across the whole degree, not the final year alone, and usually the figure your university certifies rather than one you converted yourself. Where your CGPA has to be converted first, the formula applied is your university’s, and it can move you across a boundary.
A worked case: a CGPA of 8.20 is 74.50% on the general convention — first class, one half-point below distinction. On Anna University’s straight ×10 the same 8.20 is 82.00%, comfortably a distinction. Same grade card, different institution, different award. That is the whole reason this site refuses to present one formula as standard.
Getting from where you are to a boundary
If a class is in reach, the useful question is what the remaining papers have to carry, not what the aggregate currently is. Subtract the marks already secured from the target figure and divide by the maximum still to be examined. If the result exceeds the maximum available, the target is gone and it is better to know in week nine than in week sixteen.
Percentage to marks gives the target figure for any total, and marks percentage works out where you currently stand from the marksheet.
What the class is used for
- Public-sector recruitment and government forms, which almost always work in percentage and class rather than CGPA.
- Postgraduate admission in India, where a first class is a common eligibility floor and a second class closes several routes.
- Some employers, though most campus recruiters filter on the CGPA directly. Placement cut-offs covers how those are applied.
Applications abroad rarely ask for an Indian class, because it does not map onto their own vocabulary. They want the transcript and the grading key.
