What counts as a good CGPA

The percentage column uses the general ten-point convention, (CGPA − 0.75) × 10. Your own university almost certainly publishes a different one — the formulas differ by more than 13 points on the same input — so read this as orientation, not as your figure.

It clears the tier most mass recruiters use and it is a first class at almost every university. It does not clear an 8.0 filter, and a meaningful share of product companies and consulting firms set theirs there. So a 7.0 is comfortably employable through campus recruiting and closed out of a specific band of it.

The one place a 7.0 gets awkward is postgraduate admission abroad, where a 62.50% converts poorly against institutions expecting a first class defined at 60% by some and 65% by others.

Yes, in the specific sense that matters: 8.0 is the highest threshold that appears with any frequency in published eligibility criteria, so clearing it means very few doors are shut by the number alone. It is 72.50% on the general convention and a distinction at universities that set the boundary at 70%.

It is also the most common place to sit just below. An 7.96 and an 8.00 are indistinguishable as a description of a student and completely different to a filter written as “8.0 and above”. If you are close, the CGPA calculator is worth running against your actual credit loads rather than a plain average, because the two can differ by a tenth in either direction.

77.50%, a distinction almost everywhere, and above every filter in common use. Past this point the number stops differentiating: two candidates at 8.5 and 9.2 are both through every screen, and what separates them is not on the grade card.

82.50% and in the top band of any institution. Worth knowing is that a 9.0 is rarer in Indian engineering than the equivalent-looking 3.60 GPA is abroad, because Indian marks bands are set higher relative to what papers actually award. That works in your favour with anyone who reads the grading key and against you with anyone who applies a linear conversion — which is the argument in CGPA vs GPA.

Everything above collapses into two numbers.

1. Below 6.0 you are filtered out of a large share of campus recruiting before a résumé is read. This is structural rather than a judgement, and it is the one place where the number does most of the deciding.
2. Above roughly 8.5 the number has stopped deciding anything. Every filter is already cleared, and the marginal value of another tenth is close to zero.

Between the two the CGPA is one input among several, and the specific value matters mostly at the exact boundaries — 6.0, 6.5, 7.0, 8.0 — where a hundredth changes a yes to a no.

Two students on the same CGPA can have arrived very differently: one consistent across eight semesters, the other recovering from a weak start. Because each new semester is a smaller share of a growing credit total, a recovery late in a degree barely moves the cumulative figure even when the recent semesters are much stronger. Where that is your situation, the semester-wise grade card says more than the single number does.
