Percentage to CGPA calculator

Formula (Percentage ÷ 10) + 0.75 (79.80 ÷ 10) + 0.75 = 8.73

Not verified. This formula has not been checked against General (10-point)’s own ordinance, so no source or date is shown. Confirm it against your examination manual before putting the figure on a form.

Every formula here is labelled either verified against an issuing document, or not verified. A verified badge is never shown without a real citation.

Reversing a conversion is not always possible

Converting a percentage back to CGPA means running your university formula backwards. If the forward rule is (CGPA − 0.75) × 10, the inverse is (percentage ÷ 10) + 0.75. If it is CGPA × 10, the inverse is percentage ÷ 10. The inverse is exact arithmetic, but it is not exact truth: the forward formula is a convention rather than a measurement, so the CGPA you recover is an estimate of what your grade card would have said. The forward direction lives on the CGPA to percentage page.

Some formulas cannot express the full range. Under Mumbai University’s (CGPA × 7.1) + 11, a 10-point CGPA tops out at 82.00%, so a 90% input has no valid CGPA behind it and 100% resolves to 12.53 — an impossible figure. This calculator refuses that case and names the highest percentage the selected formula can express, instead of printing a number no registrar would recognise.

The practical use for a reverse conversion is filling a form that demands CGPA when your marksheet shows only percentage, which is common for students from percentage-based boards and older universities. Where the receiving body will accept the transcript with the grading key printed on it, send that instead. A recovered CGPA is your arithmetic, not your university’s — if you still hold the grade card, the SGPA calculator computes the figure directly from subjects and credits rather than inferring it.

Formulas on this page carry the same two-tier labelling used across the site. Verified means the issuing ordinance was read and is linked with the date. Not verified means the formula is in circulation but unchecked, and the page says so plainly rather than implying an authority it does not have.

Three mistakes to avoid

01
Reversing a formula your university never used The inverse is only as good as the forward rule. Take the rule from your own ordinance.
02
Reporting a recovered CGPA as an official figure Your transcript governs. A back-calculated CGPA is an estimate and should be described as one.
03
Ignoring an out-of-range warning If the formula cannot express your percentage, the answer is not "round it down" — it is that the formula does not apply.

Frequently asked

How do I convert percentage to CGPA?
Divide by the multiplier your university uses. On the general 10-point convention it is (percentage ÷ 10) + 0.75, so 79.80% comes back as 8.73.
Is percentage ÷ 9.5 correct?
Only for a CBSE school result, where ×9.5 was the forward rule. For a university percentage it produces a CGPA your college would not recognise.
Why does 90% return an error on the Mumbai formula?
Because (10 × 7.1) + 11 is 82.00%. No CGPA on a 10-point scale can produce 90% under that rule, so there is nothing valid to return.
Can I put this CGPA on an application?
Only if the application accepts a self-computed figure. Where an official number is required, use the CGPA printed on your grade card.
Does this work for a 4-point GPA?
Not yet. The 4-point and 5-point scales ship once their conversion is verified against an issuing ordinance.
