CGPA calculator

Formula CGPA = Σ (SGPA × semester credits) ÷ Σ credits 774.2 ÷ 94 = 8.23

Semesters are weighted by their credits. Averaging SGPA numbers is only correct when every semester carries the same load.

CGPA is a weighted average of semesters

CGPA is the credit-weighted average of every semester you have completed. Multiply each semester’s SGPA by the credits that semester carried, add the products, then divide by total credits. It is not the plain average of your SGPA numbers, and the two differ whenever your semesters carry different credit loads — which, in a four-year engineering programme, they always do.

A first semester of 22 credits and a fourth of 25 do not deserve equal weight. Averaging them treats a light foundation semester as though it mattered as much as a heavy core one. Over eight semesters the drift is usually a tenth or two of a grade point, which is enough to move you across a placement cut-off written as "CGPA 8.0 and above".

Backlogs are where this gets uncomfortable. A subject cleared in a later attempt normally enters the semester in which it was cleared, at the grade obtained rather than the grade you would have got first time. Some universities cap the grade awarded on a re-attempt. Both rules pull a strong later semester down, and neither is visible in a calculator — check what your examination manual says before treating the number here as final.

Audit and non-credit courses stay off the calculation entirely. They appear on the transcript with a grade but carry zero credits, so they contribute nothing to the weighted sum. Anything with zero credits can be entered safely; it drops out of the arithmetic on its own.

If you have subject grades rather than semester averages, start with the SGPA calculator for each semester and bring the results back here. To put the finished CGPA on a form that wants a percentage, use CGPA to percentage.

Three mistakes to avoid

01
Averaging your SGPAs Semesters carry different credit totals. The plain average is only correct when every semester is identical in credits.
02
Leaving out a semester with a backlog A cleared backlog usually enters at the grade obtained, in the semester it was cleared. Omitting it overstates your CGPA.
03
Using the wrong credit total Use the credits your grade card prints for that semester, not the number of subjects.

Frequently asked

How do I calculate CGPA?
Multiply each semester’s SGPA by that semester’s credits, add the products, and divide by the total credits across all semesters. Enter your semesters above and the working is shown with your own numbers.
Can I just average my SGPAs?
Only if every semester carried exactly the same number of credits. Otherwise the plain average quietly misreports your degree, usually by a tenth or two of a grade point.
Do backlogs affect CGPA?
Yes. A cleared backlog normally enters at the grade obtained, in the semester it was cleared, which is why a cleared paper can pull down an otherwise strong semester.
What about audit courses?
They carry zero credits, so they contribute nothing. Entering them with zero credits is harmless.
Is this the CGPA my university will certify?
It is an estimate built from what you enter. Your grade card is the record, and where the two disagree your university is right.
