SGPA to CGPA calculator

Formula CGPA = Σ (SGPA × semester credits) ÷ Σ credits 774.2 ÷ 94 = 8.23

Semesters are weighted by their credits. Averaging SGPA numbers is only correct when every semester carries the same load.

When the shortcut works, and when it lies

Converting SGPAs to a CGPA means taking their credit-weighted average: each semester’s SGPA multiplied by that semester’s credits, summed, then divided by total credits. There is a well-known shortcut — just average the SGPA numbers — and it is exactly correct in one situation and quietly wrong in every other.

The shortcut is exact when every semester carries identical credits. Weighting a set of equal weights changes nothing, so the plain average and the weighted average agree to the last decimal. Some universities do run uniform credit loads across all semesters, and if yours is one of them you can average freely.

Where credits vary, the shortcut drifts in a predictable direction: it flatters whichever semesters were lightest. Four semesters of 7.80, 8.10, 8.60 and 8.40 carrying 22, 24, 25 and 23 credits average to 8.225 unweighted, but weight to 8.2362 — small here, and larger the more your credit loads diverge. A single 30-credit project semester at a low grade can move the true figure by half a point below the average you calculated.

A partial degree is fine to compute. CGPA at the end of semester four is a real number that placement portals and scholarship forms ask for constantly; it simply covers four semesters instead of eight. What you cannot do is mix a completed semester with an in-progress one — a semester with no result yet has no SGPA and no credits earned, so it stays out.

If you have subject grades rather than semester averages, compute each semester with the SGPA calculator first. Once the CGPA is settled, CGPA to percentage converts it for a form that will not take grade points.

Three mistakes to avoid

01
Using the plain average without checking credits It is exact only when every semester carries the same credits. Check your grade cards before trusting it.
02
Including a semester that has no result yet An in-progress semester has no SGPA and no earned credits. It belongs out of the calculation.
03
Weighting by subject count instead of credits Six subjects worth 18 credits weigh less than five worth 24. Use credits.

Frequently asked

How do I convert SGPA to CGPA?
Multiply each semester’s SGPA by its credits, add the products, and divide by the total credits. Enter your semesters above to see the working with your own numbers.
Is CGPA just the average of my SGPAs?
Only when every semester carries identical credits. Otherwise the plain average flatters your lightest semesters and misreports the degree.
How much difference does weighting actually make?
Usually a tenth or two of a grade point, and more when one semester carries an unusually heavy project or elective load. That is enough to cross a placement cut-off.
Can I calculate CGPA after only four semesters?
Yes. A partial CGPA is a normal thing to report, and most placement and scholarship forms expect it.
Which credits do I enter?
The total credits printed on that semester’s grade card, not the number of subjects.
