CGPA to GPA calculator

The linear conversion from a 10-point CGPA to a 4-point GPA is CGPA ÷ 10 × 4, so an 8.00 becomes 3.20. That is the arithmetic, and it is what this page computes. The more useful answer is that most universities abroad do not want you to do it: they want your transcript with the grading key printed on it, and for many programmes a credential evaluation from WES, ECE or the institution’s own office.

The reason is that the two scales are not measuring the same thing. A 4-point GPA is built from letter grades awarded per course against band boundaries that differ by institution, and a 10-point CGPA is built from grade points awarded against Indian marks bands that are themselves not uniform. Mapping one onto the other with a single multiplier assumes the bands line up. They do not — an Indian 60% is a first class and a respectable result, while the naive linear map turns it into a 2.4, which reads as mediocre to a US admissions officer who has never seen an Indian marksheet.

This is why the formula on this page ships marked as not verified. There is no issuing ordinance behind it, because no Indian university publishes an official 4-point equivalent. It is a convention in wide circulation, useful for a rough self-check and for filling a form field that refuses to accept anything above 4.0, and nothing more than that.

What to actually submit: the transcript, the grading key or conversion statement your university issues on request, and a credential evaluation where the programme asks for one. If an application form has a free-text box, many applicants enter the CGPA as issued with the scale stated — "8.00 / 10" — which is accurate and avoids the problem entirely. Where a numeric 4-point field is mandatory, use the figure here and say in an adjacent field how it was derived.
