Why the same CGPA gives different percentages

The ×9.5 multiplier everyone repeats comes from CBSE, where it was derived from the average marks of high-scoring students. It was never a universal conversion rule, and applying it to an engineering CGPA can be badly wrong. Anna University uses a straight ×10. Mumbai University uses (CGPA × 7.1) + 11. The same 8.4 produces 79.80%, 84.00% and 70.64% respectively.

This matters because the number goes onto a job application, a scholarship portal or a foreign university form, where a wrong figure is a misrepresentation rather than a rounding error. Pick your university from the dropdown, and if it is not listed, use the formula printed in your own examination ordinance rather than the general factor. If the figure you hold covers one semester rather than your whole degree, convert it on the SGPA to percentage page instead.

Every formula on this page is labelled one of two ways. Verified means someone read the issuing ordinance, circular or examination manual, and the page shows that document and the date it was read. Not verified means exactly that — the formula is in wide circulation but has not been checked against the source, so it carries no badge, no date and no link. A verified badge without a citation is worse than no claim at all, because you would then trust it.

Where a conversion is required and no official formula exists, most institutions accept the transcript itself along with the university grading key. Ask the receiving body which they prefer before converting anything by hand.

Three mistakes to avoid

Using ×9.5 for an engineering degree It is a CBSE school-board factor. Your university almost certainly publishes its own.

Rounding the result up A 79.96% is not 80%. Report two decimals exactly as calculated, or as your transcript states.

Confusing SGPA with CGPA SGPA covers one semester. CGPA is the credit-weighted average across all semesters completed so far.

Which formula should I use?
The one in your own university ordinance. Select your university above and check whether the formula is marked verified — if it is, the source document and the date it was read are linked under the result.
Is ×9.5 ever correct?
For CBSE Class X and XII, yes. For most Indian universities, no.
Can I convert a percentage back to CGPA?
Yes, using the inverse of the same formula. The percentage to CGPA page does exactly that, and refuses the cases where the formula cannot express your percentage.
How do I convert CGPA to a 4-point GPA for foreign applications?
Most universities want the transcript plus a WES or institution-specific evaluation, not a self-computed GPA. Convert only if the application explicitly asks for a number.
Why two decimal places?
Because forms usually validate to two, and truncating rather than rounding avoids overstating your result.
