Marks needed to pass calculator

Formula needed = max(aggregate requirement, external minimum) max(20, 28) = 28

Both conditions must be cleared. The larger result is rounded up to a whole mark.

Two pass rules, one mark you actually need

Many Indian universities apply two conditions to a theory subject. You must reach a minimum aggregate after internal and external marks are added, and you must separately clear a percentage of the external paper. Passing one condition does not cancel the other. This calculator works out both requirements and returns the larger whole mark.

With 20 out of 30 secured internally, a 70-mark external, a 40% aggregate rule and a 40% external rule, the aggregate needs 20 more marks but the external floor needs 28. The answer is therefore 28 out of 70. A calculator that only subtracts your internals would incorrectly report 20.

Use the optional target when pass marks are not the goal. If you enter 60%, the aggregate calculation works backwards from 60 while the external minimum still applies. The result is rounded up because a fractional examination mark cannot be scored and rounding down misses the threshold.

Rules differ by university, programme and regulation year. The fields are deliberately editable instead of presenting one institution’s numbers as universal. Read the examination ordinance or the pass criteria printed in your syllabus before relying on the result.

After results are declared, marks percentage calculates the final aggregate across subjects. If you know a percentage target but have no internal/external split, percentage to marks is the simpler calculator.

Worked pass-mark examples

Internal / maxExternal max and rulesExternal mark needed
20 / 3070 marks; 40% total, 40% external28 / 70
25 / 3070 marks; 40% total, 40% external28 / 70
18 / 3070 marks; 50% total, 40% external32 / 70
35 / 4060 marks; 50% total, 45% external27 / 60
22 / 4060 marks; 40% total, 40% external24 / 60
14 / 2080 marks; 40% total, 35% external28 / 80

Three mistakes to avoid

01
Checking only the aggregate A strong internal score cannot replace a separate minimum in the external paper.
02
Using another university’s rule Pass percentages change by institution, course and regulation year. Enter the values from your own ordinance.
03
Rounding a fractional requirement down If the calculation gives 27.2, you need 28. A score of 27 remains below the threshold.

Frequently asked

How many marks do I need in the external exam to pass?
Calculate the marks needed for the total aggregate and the separate external minimum. You must score the larger of the two figures, rounded up to a whole mark.
Why are there two passing percentages?
Many universities require both a minimum overall subject total and a separate minimum in the end-semester paper. They are independent conditions.
What if the calculator says the target is impossible?
Even full marks in the external paper cannot reach the aggregate or target entered. Check the inputs and your official rules; if they are correct, the target is mathematically unreachable from the marks already fixed.
Can I calculate marks needed for distinction or a grade?
Yes. Enter that percentage in the optional target field. The calculator still enforces the external minimum at the same time.
Are the default 40% rules valid for every university?
No. They are only a worked example. Replace both percentages with the rules published for your university, programme and regulation year.
