Difference between SGPA and CGPA

Short answer

SGPA is one semester. CGPA is every semester you have completed, so far. The arithmetic is identical — a credit-weighted average of grade points — and only the period differs. Because semesters carry different credit loads, your CGPA is not the plain average of your SGPAs.

Why averaging your SGPAs is wrong

It is the natural thing to do and it is exactly correct in one situation: when every semester carried the same number of credits. Weighting a set of equal weights changes nothing, so the plain average and the credit-weighted average agree to the last decimal.

Where credits vary, the shortcut drifts in a predictable direction — it flatters whichever semesters were lightest. Four semesters of 7.80, 8.10, 8.60 and 8.40 carrying 22, 24, 25 and 23 credits average to 8.225 unweighted and weight to 8.2362. Small, because those four loads are close together.

Now make them uneven. Two semesters, 9.00 across 18 credits and 7.00 across 30. The plain average says 8.00. The weighted figure is (162 + 210) ÷ 48 = 7.75. A quarter of a grade point, from two semesters, and it moves in the direction that matters — down, past a filter written as “8.0 and above”. SGPA to CGPA shows both figures next to each other so the gap is visible rather than assumed.

Which one is the form asking for?

Most of the time the label says, and most of the time nobody reads it. Where it is genuinely ambiguous, three tests settle it.

  1. Does the field repeat per semester? A form with eight rows wants SGPAs. A form with one box wants CGPA.
  2. Does it ask for “aggregate”, “overall”, “till date” or “upto current semester”? All four mean cumulative, whatever the acronym next to them says.
  3. Is it asking alongside a backlog count or a year of study? That is a screening form, and screening is always done on the cumulative figure.

When you still cannot tell, the cumulative figure is the safer answer: it is the one a verification team can check against a transcript, and it is the one that will be checked. A strong single semester submitted where CGPA was asked for is caught at verification rather than at screening, which is a much worse place to be caught.

What they have in common

More than the differences suggest, and it is worth being explicit because most of the confusion comes from assuming the two behave differently.

  • Both are credit-weighted averages of grade points. Neither is a plain average of anything.
  • Both use the same ten-point letter scale at most Indian universities.
  • Both count a failed subject at zero points while keeping its credits in the denominator.
  • Both ignore audit and non-credit courses entirely.
  • Both convert to a percentage with the same university formula — the arithmetic does not change because the period is shorter. SGPA to percentage and CGPA to percentage are the same operation on different inputs.

A worked comparison

Same student, four semesters, both figures at every point. This is what a grade card sequence actually looks like.

After semesterThat semester’s SGPACreditsCGPA so far
17.80227.80
28.10247.95
38.60258.18
48.40238.23

Two things are visible here. The CGPA lags the SGPA — semester 3 was an 8.60 but only moved the cumulative figure to 8.18, because it was averaged against two weaker semesters already banked. And the CGPA moves less each time, since every new semester is a smaller fraction of a growing total. By semester six, one bad semester can no longer do much damage, and one excellent one can no longer do much good.

Frequently asked

What is the difference between SGPA and CGPA?
SGPA covers a single semester; CGPA covers every semester you have completed. Both are credit-weighted averages of grade points, and the arithmetic is identical.
Is CGPA the average of all SGPAs?
Only when every semester carried identical credits. Otherwise it is the credit-weighted average, and the plain average flatters your lightest semesters.
Which is higher, SGPA or CGPA?
Neither, systematically. A semester better than your running average pulls the CGPA up; a weaker one pulls it down. Early in a degree the two are close because there is little history to average against.
How do I convert SGPA to CGPA?
Multiply each semester’s SGPA by its credits, add the products, and divide by total credits. The SGPA to CGPA calculator does it and shows the plain average alongside, so the difference is visible.
Which one do placement forms ask for?
CGPA, almost always, sometimes worded as aggregate or overall. A form that repeats the field per semester is asking for SGPAs.
Does one bad semester ruin my CGPA?
Less than it feels like, and less as the degree goes on. Each new semester is a smaller share of a growing credit total, so a weak semester six moves the cumulative figure far less than a weak semester one.
