What is SGPA?
SGPA is the credit-weighted average of the grade points you earned in one semester. Multiply each subject’s grade point by its credits, add the products, then divide by the total credits for that semester. Five subjects worth 115 weighted points across 14 credits give an SGPA of 8.21.
The calculation, in full
Take a semester of five subjects. The grade point comes from your grade card; the credits come from the syllabus.
| Subject | Grade | Grade point | Credits | Points × credits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Engineering mathematics | A+ | 9 | 4 | 36 |
| Data structures | A | 8 | 4 | 32 |
| Digital electronics | B+ | 7 | 3 | 21 |
| DS laboratory | O | 10 | 2 | 20 |
| Environmental studies | B | 6 | 1 | 6 |
| Total | — | — | 14 | 115 |
SGPA = 115 ÷ 14 = 8.21. Every step is reproducible on paper, and the SGPA calculator shows the same substitution with your own subjects.
Compare that with counting the five grades evenly: 9 + 8 + 7 + 10 + 6 = 40, divided by 5, is exactly 8.00. The weighted figure is higher because the two subjects that pulled downward — the 7 and the 6 — carried three credits and one between them, while the 9 sat on four.
What one failed subject costs
An F is zero points, and it keeps its credits in the denominator. That is what makes it expensive rather than merely bad. Replace the four-credit Data structures grade above with an F and the total drops from 115 to 83, while the credits stay at 14. The SGPA falls from 8.21 to 5.92 — a drop of 2.29 from one subject out of five.
The subject stays in the calculation until it is cleared. When it is, it usually enters the semester in which you cleared it, at the grade obtained, which is why clearing a backlog can pull down a later semester that was otherwise strong.
Two ways a semester average misleads
It says nothing about the rest of your degree
A single strong semester is a semester. Placement portals, scholarship forms and admission applications almost always want the cumulative figure, and a candidate who submits their best SGPA where CGPA was asked for is usually caught at verification rather than at screening. Read the field label. SGPA to CGPA takes your semester figures the rest of the way.
It hides which subjects carried it
Two students can finish a semester on 8.21 with completely different profiles — one consistent across five subjects, the other holding a 10 in a light laboratory against a 6 in a heavy core paper. The average cannot show that, and neither can a percentage converted from it. Where the difference matters, the grade card itself is the document to send.
Turning SGPA into the numbers forms ask for
Two conversions come up constantly, and both depend on a formula your university publishes rather than a national rule.
- To a percentage — on the general ten-point convention that is (SGPA − 0.75) × 10, so 8.40 becomes 76.50%. Anna University multiplies by 10 instead, giving 84.00%. SGPA to percentage runs whichever you select and shows the substitution.
- To a CGPA — the credit-weighted average of every semester, using each semester’s total credits as the weight. Not the plain average of your SGPA numbers, unless the credit loads happen to be identical. SGPA to CGPA does that arithmetic.
Every conversion formula on this site is labelled either verified against the issuing ordinance, with that document linked and dated, or not verified. A verified badge is never shown without a citation. Check an unverified formula against your own examination manual before the figure goes on a form.
