SGPA full form
SGPA stands for Semester Grade Point Average. It is the credit-weighted average of the grade points you earned in one semester — the same arithmetic as CGPA, applied to a single semester rather than all of them.
The only word that separates it from CGPA
SGPA and CGPA differ by exactly one letter and exactly one idea. Semester against Cumulative. Everything after that word — grade, point, average — means the same thing in both, and the arithmetic is identical.
So an SGPA describes one semester. A CGPA describes every semester you have completed, with each one weighted by the credits it carried. If a form asks for SGPA and you enter your cumulative figure, or the reverse, the number will usually still look plausible, which is precisely why it goes unnoticed.
What counts as “one semester”
Less obvious than it sounds, and the edge cases are the ones that change the figure.
- Backlog papers cleared this semester normally count in this semester, at the grade obtained — not back in the semester where the subject was first taught.
- Supplementary and summer-term results usually attach to the semester the subject belongs to, but a few universities issue a separate SGPA for the term itself. Your result sheet will say.
- Audit and non-credit courses appear with a grade and zero credits. Zero credits means zero contribution; they cannot move the figure in either direction.
- A semester still in progress has no SGPA. Subjects without a declared result carry no grade point and no earned credits, so there is nothing to average.
The letter scale behind the points
The letters differ between universities; the points are what the arithmetic uses. This is the ten-point scale used across this site, and it is the common Indian engineering convention.
| Grade | Points | Typical marks |
|---|---|---|
| O | 10 | 90–100 |
| A+ | 9 | 80–89 |
| A | 8 | 70–79 |
| B+ | 7 | 60–69 |
| B | 6 | 50–59 |
| C | 5 | 45–49 |
| P | 4 | 40–44 |
| F | 0 | below 40 |
Where your university uses different letters — S instead of O, or an E grade for a conditional pass — use the point printed on your own grade card. The marks bands also move: some ordinances start A+ at 85 rather than 80, which changes nothing about the method and everything about your grade.
Why it is not the average of your grades
Because credits weight it. Five subjects graded 9, 8, 7, 10 and 6 average to exactly 8.00 if you count them evenly. Give them credits of 4, 4, 3, 2 and 1 and the SGPA is 115 ÷ 14 = 8.21, because the 10 sat on a two-credit lab and contributed less than its face value.
This is the single most common defect in calculators found through search, and it goes in both directions — it flatters you when your strong subjects are light and understates you when they are heavy. What SGPA is works the full example through, and the SGPA calculator does it with your own subjects.
Other names for the same figure
SPI — Semester Performance Index — is the term at the IITs and Gujarat Technological University. Some universities simply write GPA and mean one semester, which collides with the American use of the word for a whole degree. YGPA appears on annual-pattern programmes where the unit is a year rather than a semester. The full list is in CGPA full form.
